FIELD NOTES: Discovering My Colors (Turns Out “Neutral” Isn’t One Color)

The Situation

I used to think my problem was that I “had nothing to wear.”

Nope.

The problem was:

  • some colors made me look alive

  • some made me look exhausted

  • and some were technically fine but somehow made me disappear completely

Very rude, honestly.

The System

I stopped thinking about color as:

  • “what colors do I like?”

…and started thinking about:

  • workhorse neutrals

  • supporting players

  • stars

  • pops

This changed everything.

What Actually Worked

Workhorse Neutrals

The pieces carrying the whole operation.

Mine are:

  • ivory

  • cream

  • olive/moss

  • cognac

  • warm denim

  • chocolate brown

  • camel/taupe

These do most of the heavy lifting.

The Stars

Colors that make me look more awake/alive/human.

For me:

  • plum

  • burgundy/wine

  • dusty rose/mauve

  • fig/eggplant tones

Not bright.
Not icy.
A little muted. A little earthy.

Pops

Tiny controlled chaos.

Usually:

  • scarf

  • shoe

  • bag

  • lipstick

  • layering tank

This keeps everything from becoming:
“sad beige lady.”

What Didn’t / I’d Change

  • Buying colors just because they were trendy

  • Cool-toned pinks → absolutely not

  • Black near my face all the time → harsh

  • Ignoring undertones → critical error

  • Thinking “mauve” means the same thing everywhere → it does not

Steal This

  • Find your 5–7 workhorse neutrals first

  • Add 2–3 “alive colors”

  • Repeat tones constantly

  • Don’t force colors you technically “can” wear

  • If you put it on and immediately look tired… believe it

The Unofficial Formula

workhorse neutrals + a few stars + controlled contrast

Closing note

I didn’t need more clothes.

I needed colors that actually liked me back.
